JV DEBATE CLASS

What is JV Debate?
What are the Goals of JV Debate?

The goals of JV Debate are for students to learn and practice:

  • Basic argumentation and refutation

  • Researching for evidence

  • Building an affirmative case

  • Writing a negative brief

  • Debate round protocol

  • Public speaking skills

  • Critical thinking skills

Ultimately, we want to prepare students for Stoa competitive debate while having fun!

How Do We Train and Equip?
  • Same resolution, plan, and evidence for both affirmative and negative sides

  • No homework; no research outside of class

  • Practice exercises and games in class

  • Working together in small groups and partners

  • Practice rounds in class

  • Tournaments - most critical piece!!!

What Commitments Do Parents Need to Make?
  • Club involvement - Parents are welcome to attend class any time. You will periodically be asked to volunteer to help with activities and practice rounds in class.

  • Tournament requirements - Students compete in two tournaments each year, one in December and one in April. You or another adult must attend and be available to judge at the tournament. A tournament is not a spectator event, but we make every effort for parents to watch one of their student's rounds. A successful tournament requires the commitment of every family to contribute to judging rounds. â€‹â€‹â€‹

  • Student support â€‹

    • Listen to your student noodle through things

    • Keep the focus on the journey, not the destination

    • Practice tough love! Don’t let your kids quit. Speech and debate is hard work, and they may feel defeated at times. But the long-term benefits will be worth it. The only way to get better is by doing it!

What are the Costs?
  • JV Supply fee - $40 per student. All supplies are provided by the teacher.

  • JV Tuition - $300 per student. â€‹â€‹A 10% discount on tuition is given for siblings or for a sibling of a student joining the Dynamis Club.

  • Tournaments

    • Are one full day

    • Have a dress code - "Sunday best" is required for tournaments. For young ladies: a dress or a pant or skirt suit and professional footwear. For young men: a suit or jacket (if possible) and dress pants plus dress shirt, tie, and dress shoes.

    • Have a cost for fees and meals
